Many individuals seek therapy when they notice that their emotional difficulties or relationship patterns feel "stuck" or repetitive. While short-term therapies can be effective for immediate symptoms, Schema Therapy is designed to address the deeper, long-standing beliefs that underlie chronic mental health challenges.
Developed by Dr. Jeffrey Young, Schema Therapy is an evidence-based, integrative approach. It combines the structured nature of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) with the depth of attachment theory and emotion-focused techniques.
This modality was specifically created to support those who may not have fully benefited from standard CBT, particularly in cases of chronic depression, anxiety, complex trauma, and persistent relationship difficulties.
We all have "Schemas"—essentially, these are the mental maps or "blueprints" we developed when our core childhood needs (like safety, love, or acceptance) weren't fully met.
Schemas: These are the deeply held beliefs like "I’m not good enough" or "People will always leave me." When these are triggered, they bring up painful memories and physical sensations.
Modes: These are the different "sides" of us that show up when a schema is triggered. You might notice a Vulnerable Child part that feels small and overwhelmed, or a Protective part that shuts down to avoid more pain.
Our goal is to strengthen your Healthy Adult—the wise, compassionate part of you that can look after your vulnerable side and make healthy choices for your future. Our work together usually moves through three phases:
Safety & Connection: We focus on building a trusting relationship and learning tools to manage intense emotions in your daily life.
Healing & Change: We work to identify the origins of your patterns. Using techniques such as Imagery Rescripting and Chair Work, we aim to process the emotional memories attached to your schemas rather than just discussing them intellectually.
Building the 'Healthy Adult': The ultimate goal is to strengthen your Healthy Adult mode. This is the part of you capable of nurturing your vulnerable side, setting healthy boundaries, and making choices that meet your needs.
While therapy is a highly individual experience, Schema Therapy is particularly well-suited for those looking to move beyond symptom management toward deeper characterological change. It offers a structured path for those who wish to understand the "why" behind their pain and develop a more compassionate, functional relationship with themselves and others.
Schema Therapy is particularly effective for:
Chronic depression or anxiety
Complex trauma and PTSD
Difficulties with self-esteem and identity
Repeating patterns in relationships
